May Day: a "holiday" over ruins

May Day: a "holiday" over ruins ANDREA STEFANI Today is May Day. And probably it may be the saddest and most paradoxical Labor Day this country has ever experienced. At least in our century. Because today, here, alongside workers, owners, capitalists, and entrepreneurs are also celebrating. Together with them, the unemployed, looters of depots, traffickers, thieves large and small, the strongmen and the perpetrators of the uprisings, their factions and gangs, the leaders of political parties and of the pyramid companies, those who made March 1 possible and everything that followed it, are celebrating too. Because all of them, although with different interests, are united by success. All are winners, in different ways. At the expense of labor and the state, of order and freedom, of the vote and of rights, of law and civilization. They are winners because in Albania work has collapsed, and with it sacrifice, dedication, honesty, order, progress. The factories and businesses that, although they set something in motion, were nevertheless workplaces, have also collapsed. Money has collapsed, and so have the banks. Offices and the administration have shut down. Neither goods, nor capital, nor free people can move. Nothing works. Except the barrels of Kalashnikovs and theft. Thousands upon thousands of people have lost not only their jobs and income, but also their faith. Today it is hard to imagine how investment, trade, production, calm, order, administration, and the very reason for social life can be renewed. But who brought this misery to light? Who dismantled and ruined it? Who made work ridiculous and unemployment a triumph? This was done by armed rebellion, political hatred and blindness, the thirst for power at any cost, impatience toward law and the state, the delirium of destruction that presents itself as the revolution of the people. Precisely because work has been trampled underfoot, today May 1 is a meaningless holiday, an empty ritual over ruins.
